Yoga Class Descriptions
Welcome to Sunflower Yoga! Instruction, adjustments and refinements are built into each class to increase understanding of asana (postures) and pranayama (breath work). We see yoga as more than exercise — rather, a way of being. We are Kripalu trained and believe that yoga is available to everyone. Modifications and props are always available. Each class offers centering and warming, asana and pranayama, cooling and relaxation. Students experience flowing sequences (vinyasa) and use breath to support the connection of body, mind and spirit to explore yogic philosophy and meditation.
Each class offers challenge and the opportunity to stop and modify at any point in the progression of a particular pose or flow. Listening to your body and respecting your limits are basic tenants of any healthy and safe yoga practice. All classes explore standing, sitting, reclining poses and twists to strengthen, stretch, lengthen the spine, create space in the joints, deepen awareness of the breath and quiet the mind. Welcome!
Gentle Yoga
Gentle Yoga classes are for students who prefer a slower-paced practice. Students of all levels, including beginners, are welcome.
Gentle/Level 1 Yoga
Students who are new to yoga or those seeking to expand their practice will feel comfortable in Gentle/Level 1.
Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is suitable for nearly all levels of students and is a delicious complement to your active yoga practice. Yin postures (asana) are held for 3-5 minutes (or longer) aiming to increase circulation in joints and improving flexibility. Yin is low and slow – a bridge between meditation and active practice. Give it a try!
Gentle and Restorative Yoga
A slow-paced but active practice, with emphasis on stretching and movement, followed by several deeply relaxing, passive poses, this class is recommended for all levels of yogis who are able to transition easily between standing postures and seated or reclining poses on the mat.
Level 1 Yoga
Level 1 will allow you to build on your yoga practice incorporating sequencing and variations to encourage greater flexibility, balance and breath awareness.
Level 1-2 Yoga
Level 1-2 is more challenging and vigorously paced, suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate yogis. Level 1-2 is not intended for students new to yoga.
Gentle Adaptive Yoga
This class is for individuals living with impaired mobility or balance. Class begins seated in chairs. Extra time is spent on positions and using props to ensure a safe and supportive approach to yoga for each individual student.
